University of Nebraska
Career Opportunities in Research Education and Training

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has funding from the National Institute of Mental Health for the Career Opportunities in Research Education and Training program (COR). Students are involved in a training program with culturally-specific research models that will include traditional approaches to well-being along with European/Western approaches to mental health research, evaluation, and practice.

The program provides a strong support system for the students to ensure successful completion of their undergraduate degrees by providing scholarship support as well as help finding additional resources at UNL and in the Lincoln community. The COR program helps students with academic support to ensure that graduation requirements are met, assists with tutoring if needed, provides tribal and cultural support, and creates a comfortable and supportive environment for students and their families to succeed.

The COR program also prepares students for graduate school upon completion of Bachelor’s degrees. Research experience is provided in a supportive environment. The ultimate goal of the COR program is to recruit and nurture highly qualified undergraduate students for training as the future generation of mental health researchers involved in American Indian communities.

American Indians have the highest rates of a number of social problems across the U.S. The history of American Indians taints our trust of many health institutions and also contributes to many mental health problems. The conventional mental health interventions have not been proven to work for American Indians and new methods are needed to help the American Indian people. The COR program helps to alleviate this problem and to train the next generation of mental health researchers and practioners.
